They carry a hefty premium over their respective BS4-compliant iterations

  • The two bikes share a 1170cc air-cooled boxer engine with oil cooler.
  • Peak power is down by 1PS, torque remains the same.
  • Sold via the CBU route, the prices start from Rs 16,75,000 (ex-showroom India).

BMW Motorrad has launched the Euro 5/ BS6-compliant iterations of the BMW R nineT neo-retro roadster and the R nineT Scrambler in India. The two bikes were unveiled globally back in October 2020. In India, the two motorcycles are sold via the CBU (completely built unit) route, and are priced at Rs 16,75,000 for the R nineT Scrambler and Rs 18,50,000 for the R nineT, ex-showroom India. This makes them Rs 85,000 and Rs 80,000 more expensive than their respective BS4-compliant versions.

The two motorcycles share the same BS6-compliant 1,170cc air-cooled boxer engine with oil cooling. BMW Motorrad says the cylinder heads are new and the torque distribution is increased in the mid-range. That said, the engine produces the same 116Nm as before, and the peak power has in fact gone down by 1PS, at 109PS. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with an hydraulically actuated clutch and a shaft final drive. Standard electronics include two rider modes (Rain and Road), cornering ABS, and traction control.

The R nineT Scrambler uses a telescopic front fork along with a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels with knobby rubber, whereas the road-biased R nineT employs a fully-adjustable upside down front fork and 17-inch spoke wheels with street-oriented tyres on both ends. The frame and the rear Paralever suspension are common to both.

It’s odd that BMW Motorrad is offering alloys on an off-road-biased variant of a bike, and spokes on the road-biased model. You could opt for spoke or alloy wheels offered as a part of the official accessory list with either bikes, but they will command a hefty premium. BMW Motorrad also offers an extra riding mode, cruise control and heated grips among others as accessories.

Bookings are open at all the 15 BMW Motorrad dealerships in India, and the bikes come with a three-year, unlimited km warranty as standard. While the BMW R nineT goes up against the much more affordable Triumph Bonneville T120, the BMW R nineT Scrambler competes against the Ducati Scrambler 1100 Dark Pro. The Italian motorcycle offers better electronics and underpinnings while undercutting the Beemer by Rs 5.76 lakh.
