Leaked patent image of Suzuki’s quarter-litre offering reveals a single-cylinder oil-cooled SOHC engine

  • The Gixxer 250 will derive its underpinnings from the smaller 150cc Gixxer
  • A faired SF version of the bike is likely to be launched later on
  • Likely to launch around March or April 2019

The Suzuki Gixxer 250 is one of the most eagerly awaited bikes of 2019 and now for the first time ever, details of its engine have emerged. A leaked patent image shows the 250cc single-cylinder engine featuring a four-valve SOHC layout and a unique vertically-stacked oil-cooling setup. Moreover, a faired version of the Gixxer 250 is likely to be launched later on.

Coming to the engine, Suzuki has probably chosen an oil-cooled setup instead of liquid-cooling because of cost concerns. The quarter-litre engine will also get fuel-injection and is likely to produce between 22PS to 24PS of power. And although its chief competitor, the Yamaha FZ 25, gets a 5-speed gearbox, we expect the Gixxer 250 to feature a 6-speed unit. Underpinnings of the bike will be derived from the smaller Gixxer while it will get disc brakes at both ends with single-channel ABS as standard. In terms of equipment too, the new bike is expected to get an all-digital instrument console like its younger sibling.

Based on the Suzuki Houje DR300/GSX-S300, the Gixxer 250 will compete with the Yamaha FZ 25, which is currently India’s most affordable 250cc motorcycle. Expect Suzuki to price the bike around Rs 1.3 lakh to 1.4 lakh (ex-showroom). The Gixxer 250’s faired version, when launched, will go head-to-head with the Yamaha Fazer 25 and sport a premium of around Rs 10,000 over the naked version.

The Gixxer 250, or whatever it’s eventually named, is a significant launch for Suzuki. It comes after the Japanese bikemaker’s decision last year to focus on the higher-margin premium (150cc and above) motorcycle category in India. The Gixxer 250 will join the 150cc Gixxer, the Burgman Street and the Intruder in Suzuki’s made-for-India product lineup that is likely to be exported to other markets around the world.

The bike will also address to some extent the huge gap that currently exists between the top-of-the-line Gixxer SF and Suzuki’s big bike range. More importantly, this will be the company’s second attempt at cracking the 250cc motorcycle segment after the ill-fated Inazuma 250, which failed to set the sales charts on fire mainly because of its high price tag. Rumours about the launch of the new Suzuki Gixxer 250 have been doing the rounds for some time now. The leaked engine patent image follows news of the bike being possibly showcased at an upcoming dealer-only meet in January 2019. In keeping with that, Suzuki could probably launch the Gixxer 250 in March or April 2019.
