Minor changes or a substantial update over the BS4 model? Here’s what you need to know

Just like the rest of the manufacturers,  Royal Enfield too has started rolling out its BS6 motorcycles for 2020. The latest candidate to join the force is the Himalayan BS6, which is offered in three new colours along with a price increment of around Rs 6,000. But what does the price hike actually get you when compared to the BS4 model?

Performance drop?

Though the engine remains largely unchanged, the BS6-compliant motor does witness a minor drop in performance -- from 24.7PS to 24.3PS (0.5PS). The change could be attributed to the updates made to the cat-con and ECU for lower tailpipe emissions. Although, we would like to point out that there’s no official word from Royal Enfield. Torque output, on the other hand, remains unchanged at 32Nm.

Feature updates?

Aside from a future-proof engine, the BS6 model gets a couple of feature updates as well. This includes a hazard toggle switch, available on the older generation Himalayan as well, and switchable ABS, which would be extremely handy for off-road use. According to Royal Enfield, the side-stand has been reworked making it easier to park on any terrain.

The addition of these updates has resulted in a weight gain of 5kg -- a tad more than we would have expected. The BS4 model in comparison weighs in at 194kg (kerb). Apart from this, the BS6 model remains unchanged. It uses the same long-travel suspension at both ends along with dual-purpose tyres -- 21-inch up front and 17-inch at the rear.
